With a strong year in music, the results of the 65th Annual Grammy Awards were up in the air for all categories. Musical superstars such as Beyoncé, Adele, Harry Styles, and more were up against each other for the big three categories with a result in each being an upset. In fact, there was a shocking amount of unpredicted winners this year for many categories. Nonetheless, one of the best years in music can be thanked to all of the artists nominated for a Grammy. Creating a vibrant show with performances by Bad Bunny, Lizzo, Sam Smith, Steve Lacy, Mary J. Blige, Brandi Carlile, Luke Combs, Kim Petras, and a large collection of rappers performing in tribute to the 50th year of hip-hop, the 2023 Grammys celebrates the diverse world of music that is popular today.
Beyoncé’s New Title
In winning Best R&B Song for ‘Cuff It’ and Best Electronic/Dance Album for ‘Renaissance’, Beyoncé now holds the title of the artist with the most Grammys at 32 total trophies across her career (including Destiny’s Child). As deserved for being the greatest performer alive, the title suits Beyoncé and there aren’t many others that would rightfully deserve the title. However, the Beyhive had a bittersweet ending to the award night. Although the title made Beyoncé break history, the Beyhive was not satisfied as Beyoncé was snubbed from the big three categories of Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Album of the Year.

Snubs and Surprises
Album of the Year was the most shocking snub of the night for all of the other nominees. For the last category of the night, it was awarded to Harry Styles for his album ‘Harry’s House’. Many fans of other artists and even some Harry fans took to Twitter to discuss the upset. Although a surprise of the night, it was also not a shocker. Looking at the other nominees for the category such as Beyoncé, Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar, and more, it kind of seemed obvious that it was going to be awarded to the white mainstream pop artist, which is why it seemed semi-nonsensical when Styles said, “This doesn’t happen to people like me very often,” during his award speech. But, with the stacked nomination lineup for the category including Bad Bunny, Beyoncé, Lizzo, Adele, Kendrick Lamar, Brandi Carlile, Coldplay, Kendrick Lamar, ABBA, and Mary J. Blige, there was bound to be a large collection of upset fans around the world, but the general consensus of who truly deserved the award seemed to be Beyoncé for ‘Renaissance’ or Bad Bunny’s ‘Un Verano Sin Ti’ as this Best Musica Urbana Album winner was 2022’s No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 year-end Albums charts.

Another surprise of the night was the Best New Artist winner, Samara Joy. As the award has traditionally gone to the next big chart topper like Olivia Rodrigo, Megan Thee Stallion, and Dua Lipa, Samara Joy isn’t found on any of the major Billboard charts. Her music isn’t hip-hop nor pop but is categorized under jazz. In another upset, Bonnie Raitt took home the trophy for Song of the Year for her songwriting in her blues single ‘Just Like That’. It is a well deserved win after her decades in the industry, but it was an unexpected win for one of the biggest categories of the night.

Highlights
In one of the top performances of the night, LL Cool J, Queen Latifah, and many other hip-hop elites took to the stage in a 13-minute performance. From the old school dominating rappers like Missy Elliot and Too $hort to the new fresh voices of hip-hop like Lil Baby and GloRilla, the performance was a good encapsulation of the journey through the hip-hop genre and it was a performance that viewers couldn’t take their eyes off.
There were many firsts in this year’s Grammys as well, such as Kim Petras being the first transgender woman to win Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for ‘Unholy’ with Sam Smith. Another category in which a snub was voiced as many wanted the trophy to go to the long-standing Hot 100 hit ‘I Like You (A Happier Song)’ by Post Malone and Doja Cat or the BTS and Coldplay crossover ‘My Universe’, but the world was happy to see this milestone in the music industry’s inclusivity.
Viola Davis, who has been a big figure in Hollywood for decades, has finally achieved EGOT status for winning a Grammy for Best Audiobook, Narration, & Storytelling for her spoken word album ‘Finding Me’. This makes her the 18th person to achieve EGOT status and the third black woman to be granted the title only given to the most multi-talented individuals in entertainment.

An excerpt from the love letter: The Hollywood Insider’s CEO/editor-in-chief Pritan Ambroase affirms, “We have the space and time for all your stories, no matter who/what/where you are. Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. In fact, I reckon that we should announce “talent-diversity-authenticity-storytelling-Cinema-Oscars-Academy-Awards” as synonyms of each other. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.
I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.”
