NYFF:
‘A House of Dynamite’
Kathryn Bigelow’s first film since 2017’s ‘Detroit’ could not come any sooner, especially when taking a peek at the cast and synopsis. Per the festival’s official website, ‘A House of Dynamite’ is about, “The detection of an unidentified incoming missile sets in motion an escalating series of actions and reactions across all levels of the U.S. government in Kathryn Bigelow’s kinetic thriller, featuring a terrific ensemble cast led by Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, and Gabriel Basso.” Additional cast members include Anthony Ramos, Tracy Letts, Greta Lee, and Jason Clarke. Bigelow is one of the most successful female directors of the past thirty years, and the first to win Best Director at the Oscars, with two wins for ‘The Hurt Locker’.

‘Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere’
Jeremy Allen White finds himself in his biggest leading role to date (outside of ‘The Bear’) in his follow up to the depressing ‘The Iron Claw’, this time taking on a performance as Bruce Springsteen. Musical biopics have always been a part of Hollywood, with extremely successful ones like ‘Walk the Line’ and ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ (which has aged poorly), but they seem to be over-saturated nowadays. Sure, ‘A Complete Unknown’ was entertaining, thanks to powerhouse performances from Chalamet and Barbaro, and people seem to love them. They just don’t scratch the itch that Cinema has been missing for years and years, going by the same playbook each time. ‘Springsteen’ could be different, however. The first trailer shows White going balls to the wall on and off stage, delivering a level of commitment to the role that is expected from someone with his range. It is a part of the spotlight section at the festival and will be one to look out come awards season.
‘Is This Thing On?’
Bradley Cooper is back in the director’s chair following his beautifully framed yet seemingly never-ending, ‘Maestro’. This time his main character is trading in the conductor’s baton for a stand-up mic. According to IMDB, the premise reads, “As their marriage unravels, Alex faces middle age and divorce, seeking new purpose in the New York comedy scene while wife Tess confronts the sacrifices she made for their family-forcing them to navigate co-parenting and identity.” Will Arnett (who is also a credited writer along with Cooper) is playing Alex opposite Laura Dern as Tess. Cooper is taking a backseat this time in a supporting role, alongside names like Sean Hayes and Amy Sedaris. ‘Is This Thing On?’ will have its world premiere as the closing film of the festival, and it will be interesting to see where this stacks up in the Oscar race next year.

TIFF:
‘Rental Family’
Hikari’s much anticipated sophomore feature film starring Brendan Fraser that’s been in production since 2019 (when her first feature ‘37 Seconds’ was released) finally has a release date. It follows an American actor (Fraser) living in Tokyo who starts working for a Japanese “rental family” company to play stand-in roles in other people’s lives. Hikari’s more recognizable work has been in television, including the short lived HBO series ‘Tokyo Vice’ and critically acclaimed Netflix mini-series ‘Beef’. ‘Rental Family’ will mark Brendan Fraser’s first leading role since his Oscar winning performance in ‘The Whale’. He has appeared in supporting roles since then, including a small part in ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’.
‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’
Ever since ‘The Last Jedi’ (which should have gotten the follow up l it deserved), Rian Johnson has been making these entertainingly dark ‘Knives Out’ movies ever with Daniel Craig and all-star casts. ‘Wake Up Dead Man’ will be no different. The ensemble includes Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, and Cailee Spaeny, among many other notable names. From the trailer that was released at Netflix TUDUM, it appears that this mystery will have a much darker tone than the previous entries (including a muted color palette). ‘Glass Onion’ was goofy, clearly satirizing the rich and the technologically reliant society that has broken out in the past decade because of them.

‘Roofman’
Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst are teaming up with director Derek Cianfrance for a crime comedy-drama film. It is a biopic about the fugitive Jeffrey Manchester, a former Army officer who robbed different branches of McDonald’s and evaded capture by hiding in a Toys “R” Us. The trailer was released a short while ago and looks like a crowdpleaser, especially with Tatum and Dunst in leading roles. This will be Cianfrance’s first feature since ‘The Light Between Oceans’, and he is best known for ‘Blue Valentine’ and ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’.
Venice:
‘After the Hunt’
Luca Guadagnino’s follow up to ‘Queer’ and ‘Challengers’ dives into the life of a college professor dealing with “cancel culture”, her secretive past, and a serious accusation against her colleague. With a cast led by Julia Roberts (in just her third film of the decade), Andrew Garfield, Ayo Edebiri, and Michael Stuhlbarg, ‘After the Hunt’ is one of the most anticipated films set to premiere at Venice. If this exceeds (or even meets) expectations, award season can’t come soon enough, especially when you have Roberts and Garfield at the front and center of the campaign.

‘Father, Mother, Sister, Brother’
Although Jim Jarmusch’s first feature since ‘The Dead Don’t Die’ in 2019 was rumored to premiere at Cannes earlier this year, it has been a lock for Venice as of June (per the film’s distributor, Mubi). Cate Blanchett leads the ensemble cast consisting of Adam Driver (who worked with Jarmusch on ‘Paterson’ and ‘The Dead Don’t Die’), Vicky Krieps, Tom Waits, Mayim Bialik, and Charlotte Rampling. ‘Father, Mother, Sister, Brother ‘ is said to be an anthology comedy-drama where estranged siblings reunite, confronting their past problems and relationships. Each part of the story is going to be set in a different country, in places like New Jersey, Ireland, and France.
‘Jay Kelly’
A Noah Baumbach picture starring George Clooney, Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, and Greta Gerwig (among many other notable names) could be exactly what the world needs. Expected to be one of the most exciting releases of the fall (even if it is on Netflix), ‘Jay Kelly’ will find its way to Venice and premiere towards the end of the festival. So far we’ve gotten a trailer (with many mentions of the name Jay Kelly) and the tagline, “Everyone knows Jay Kelly, but he doesn’t know himself.” Baumbach is very overdue for an Oscar, so this will make for a very interesting award season with him in the mix once again. Same goes for Adam Sandler, who is always disregarded by the Academy in his serious roles (as seen with ‘Uncut Gems’ and ‘Punch-Drunk Love’).

An excerpt from the love letter: The Hollywood Insider’s CEO/editor-in-chief Pritan Ambroase affirms, “We have the space and time for all your stories, no matter who/what/where you are. Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. In fact, I reckon that we should announce “talent-diversity-authenticity-storytelling-Cinema-Oscars-Academy-Awards” as synonyms of each other. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.
I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.”
