Karla Sofía Gascón is clearing up recently made comments involving fellow Oscar nominee Fernanda Torres.
The Emilia Pérez star is nominated in the Best Actress category at the Academy Awards along with the I’m Still Here star Torres. Gascón claimed in an interview that people around Torres were trying to diminish her work but made it clear that her remarks were not aimed at the Brazilian actress.
“I am an enormous fan of Fernanda Torres, and it has been wonderful getting to know her over the past few months,” Gascón said. “In my recent comments, I was referencing the toxicity and violent hate speech on social media that I sadly continue to experience.”
She continued, “Fernanda has been a wonderful ally, and no one directly associated with her has been anything but supportive and hugely generous.”
Emilia Pérez has been controversial among audiences, and social media has not been kind to the Jacques Audiard-directed film. Amid the controversy, Torres, who recently won at the Golden Globes for her acting work in I’m Still Here, addressed the “hate” online and asked people to be kind to Gascón.
“Everybody deserves our affection. Let’s not feed hate,” Torres said on Instagram. “And I want to say that Karla Sofía Gascón, I love you forever. A generous woman, talented that deserves all our affection.”
Torres recalled attending a party in Hollywood where she met Gascón, who helped introduce her to fellow attendees, adding, “I didn’t believe. She was so kind to me. She was very supportive. She really put me on the spot and introduced me to the party.”
Gascón and Torres are nominated in the Best Actress category alongside Demi Moore (The Substance), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), and Mikey Madison (Anora).
In an interview with Brazil’s Folha de São Paulo, Gascón opened up about the negativity she has been subject to on social media saying, “I don’t like that there’s a social media team that work around these people that are attempting to discredit my work and my film because that doesn’t take us anywhere.”
In the same interview, Gascón also had kind words for Torres, calling her a wonderful woman, an excellent actress, and deserves all the recognition in the world.”
