Expected Titles at the 2025 Venice Film Festival

‘After the Hunt’

Luca Guadagnino’s follow up to ‘Queer’ and ‘Challengers’ dives into the life of a college professor dealing with “cancel culture”, her secretive past, and a serious accusation against her colleague. With a cast led by Julia Roberts (in just her third film of the decade), Andrew Garfield, Ayo Edebiri, and Michael Stuhlbarg, ‘After the Hunt’ is one of the most anticipated films expected to premiere at Venice. If this exceeds (or even meets) expectations, award season can’t come soon enough, especially when you have Roberts and Garfield at the front and center of the campaign.

‘Bugonia’

Surprising to absolutely no one, Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone are teaming up once again. This time she’s playing Michelle, an extremely powerful CEO of a pharmaceutical company who gets kidnapped by two crazed men that think she’s an alien planning on destroying Earth. Jesse Plemons is reuniting with his ‘Kinds of Kindness’ director, playing a conspiracy-brained beekeeper alongside Aidan Delbis while Alicia Silverstone and Stavros Halkias take unknown supporting roles. Set in a more modern world, ‘Bugonia’ seems like a departure from Yorgos’ period pieces in ‘Poor Things’ and ‘The Favourite’, which I for one, am extremely excited for.

‘The Ballad of a Small Player’

Not much information has been released about ‘The Ballad of a Small Player’ so far, except for the fact that it is based on a 2014 novel of the same name, written by Lawrence Osborne, and Netflix is expected to release it this fall. Edward Berger (‘Conclave’) is directing yet another adaptation while Colin Farrell scores himself yet another lead role, this time as a gambler who flees Britain to Macau with a con artist. Tilda Swinton joined the cast shortly after Farrell, but her part is unknown. Netflix usually has a strong presence at Venice, so it won’t be a surprise if this film has its premiere here.

‘Father, Mother, Sister, Brother’

Although Jim Jarmusch’s first feature since ‘The Dead Don’t Die’ in 2019 was rumored to premiere at Cannes earlier this year, it is certainly a lock for Venice as of June (per the film’s distributor, Mubi). Cate Blanchett leads the ensemble cast consisting of Adam Driver (who worked with Jarmusch on ‘Paterson’ and ‘The Dead Don’t Die’), Vicky Krieps, Tom Waits, Mayim Bialik, and Charlotte Rampling. ‘Father, Mother, Sister, Brother ‘ is said to be an anthology comedy-drama where estranged siblings reunite, confronting their past problems and relationships. Each part of the story is going to be set in a different country, in places like New Jersey, Ireland, and France.

‘Frankenstein’

After its trailer was released at Netflix Tudum a month or so ago, Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Frankenstein’ quickly became one of the most anticipated titles of the year. It has been in the works for almost twenty years but didn’t truly get off the ground and running until a few years ago. Andrew Garfield was originally announced as the part of Frankenstein’s Monster but left due to scheduling issues amidst the 2023 strikes. ‘Frankenstein’ now consists of a cast led by Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, Mia Goth as his fiancee, Elizabeth, and Jacob Elordi as The Monster. Slated to hit streaming in November, there is no reason as to why this won’t have its world premiere at Venice (and please give us a theatrical release, Netflix).

‘Hamnet’

Based on a novel of the same name, Chloe Zhao’s ‘Hamnet’ could not be any more different than her previous effort for Marvel in ‘The Eternals’. Derived from a script she co-wrote with the book’s author Maggie O’Farrell, the film follows William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes after the death of their son, Hamnet. Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley star as William and Agnes while Joe Alwyn and Emily Watson take supporting roles. Mescal and Buckley are two of the best working actors today (‘Aftersun’ and ‘I’m Thinking of Ending Things’ are two of the decade’s very best), so this will most likely be in the awards conversation later this year after its November release.

‘Is This Thing On?’

Bradley Cooper is back in the director’s chair following his beautifully framed yet seemingly never-ending, ‘Maestro’. This time his main character is trading in the conductor’s baton for a stand-up mic. According to IMDB, the premise reads, “As their marriage unravels, Alex faces middle age and divorce, seeking new purpose in the New York comedy scene while wife Tess confronts the sacrifices she made for their family-forcing them to navigate co-parenting and identity.” Will Arnett (who is also a credited writer along with Cooper) is playing Alex opposite Laura Dern as Tess. Cooper is taking a backseat this time in a supporting role, alongside names like Sean Hayes and Amy Sedaris. Searchlight Pictures doesn’t have a strong awards contender this year, so it wouldn’t be shocking if this ended up at Venice before going wide in the fall.

‘Jay Kelly’

A Noah Baumbach picture starring George Clooney, Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, and Greta Gerwig (among many other notable names) could be exactly what the world needs. Expected to be one of the most exciting releases of the fall (even if it is on Netflix), ‘Jay Kelly’ should find its way to Venice. So far we’ve gotten a handful of stills and the tagline, “Everyone knows Jay Kelly, but he doesn’t know himself.” Baumbach is very overdue for an Oscar, so this will make for a very interesting award season with him in the mix once again. Same goes for Adam Sandler, who is always disregarded by the Academy in his serious roles (as seen with ‘Uncut Gems’ and ‘Punch-Drunk Love’).

‘The Smashing Machine’

Benny Safdie’s first feature since co-directing ‘Uncut Gems’ with his brother Josh (who’s film ‘Marty Supreme’ starring Timothée Chalamet releases on Christmas) is a biographical sports drama with Dwayne Johnson stepping back into the ring – this time as former wrestler and MMA fighter Mark Kerr. Emily Blunt is playing Dawn Staples, Kerr’s wife in the film, now ex-wife. The Rock looks nothing like himself in the trailer (which is a nice change), and the production design looks top notch just based on the two minutes we see. Safdie’s career has gone in an interesting career since 2019, taking more acting roles in movies like ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret.’ and working on TV with Nathan Fielder on ‘The Curse’.

An excerpt from the love letter: The Hollywood Insider’s CEO/editor-in-chief Pritan Ambroase affirms, We have the space and time for all your stories, no matter who/what/where you are. Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. In fact, I reckon that we should announce “talent-diversity-authenticity-storytelling-Cinema-Oscars-Academy-Awards” as synonyms of each other. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.

I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.”
