In the latest example of building crossover film-TV universes based on its original titles, Netflix has greenlighted a TV series starring Omar Sy (Lupin) set in the world of its action thriller movie franchise , headlined by Chris Hemsworth.
Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead) serves as executive producer and showrunner on the eight-episode series executive produced by Joe Russo and Anthony Russo’s AGBO which produced the movies, written by Joe Russo.
Set in the high-octane world of Extraction, the yet-untitled action thriller series follows a mercenary (Sy) as he navigates a dangerous mission to rescue hostages in Libya. Trapped between warring factions and ruthless killers, the series delves into the emotional struggles of conflicted and flawed characters, each facing trauma, betrayal, and life-or-death choices.
“Audiences are in for a thrill as we delve deeper into the Extraction universe,” said Peter Friedlander, VP, Scripted Series, Netflix. “With Omar Sy leading the charge, our collaboration with the Russos, alongside Glen Mazzara, fans can expect even more of the high-octane adventures they love from the Extraction franchise.”
This is the second time Netflix has extended a successful original movie franchise into a TV series. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before film trilogy spawned hit comedy series XO, Kitty, which was recently renewed for a third season. In the opposite direction, the streamer has a Peaky Blinders movie coming up based on the popular TV series.
“I’m a very lucky man,” Mazzara said. “Omar is a huge talent. Joe, Anthony, and Angela have welcomed me into the AGBO family. The team at Netflix is truly the best I’ve ever worked with. Very lucky indeed.”
Mazzara executive produces the Extraction series with Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Angela Russo-Otstot, Scott Nemes and Chris Castaldi for AGBO, Sam Hargrave, Eric Gitter and Peter Schwerin.

The 2020 action thriller Extraction, directed Sam Hargrave, was based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks. Hemsworth stars as an Australian black ops mercenary who takes on a mission to save an Indian drug lord’s kidnapped son in Dhaka, Bangladesh, but the mission goes awry when he is double-crossed.
A sequel, Extraction 2 was released in 2023, with the main cast returning. The movie brings back Hemsworth’s Rake, the Australian black ops mercenary who is now tasked with a new mission — rescuing the battered family of a ruthless Georgian gangster from the prison where they are being held.
