There has been a lot to like in this landmark 50th Season of Saturday Night Live, as NBC prepares for a prime time special on the show’s first half century, and documentary episodes unfurl on subjects like how the Will Ferrell-Christopher Walken sketch classic More Cowbell came into being. Despite the sharp work being turned in on a high percentage of the weekly sketches — Andrew Dismukes’ Weekend Update segment with a puppet replicating his father was a highlight this weekend — there inevitably are sketches that don’t make the mark. Sometimes, they’re just way out there, but still funny — remember Headwound Harry, where a woozy Dana Carvey ruins a party by showing up with a serious head wound, laying down and bleeding all over the couch, and when a dog rushes to eat the meat affixed to his head, Carvey opines that “he must smell my dog.” Hilarious.
What I’m talking about is a dog of a sketch from the Timothee Chalamet-hosted show this weekend that by my estimation was the dumbest and most unfunny skit I can recall on an otherwise fun show. And I’ve been an avid watcher for 50 years. Watch and decide for yourself. This is not to create a pile on over the show’s quality, which I believe is solid, but I’m curious if Deadline readers can remember a more unfunny and pointless sketch than this one.
