News Out of San Diego Comic-Con 2025

George Lucas’ Museum of Narrative Art

George Lucas made his first appearance, alongside Guillermo Del Toro and Queen Latifah, at San Diego Comic-Con, unveiling what will be displayed in the billion dollar museum. It is said to include many items related to visual storytelling and will hold Star Wars items like a Naboo star fighter and General Grievous’ wheel-bike, Indiana Jones concept art, and vintage comic books from both DC and Marvel. A Greek, Roman, and Egyptian mythology exhibit, along with two theaters, over thirty galleries, and a library, will be included in the museum, and Lucas is rounding it out with a display of Frida Kahlo paintings he owns as a nice, personal touch.

The museum is set to open in 2026 in Los Angeles after years of delay due to construction problems (rejections from Chicago/San Francisco) and the pandemic.

‘Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord’ and ‘Ashoka’

The first photos for both series were released at the convention center. Maul is back (for what seems like the millionth time) for his own animated series following him as he rebuilds the crime syndicate and trains an apprentice during the time of the Galactic Empire. Dave Filoni created the series and will serve as an executive producer, while Sam Witwer will return to voice the infamous character.

Maul has been a consequential character in animated series like ‘The Clone Wars’ and ‘Rebels’ since his debut in ‘The Phantom Menace’. Most of his arcs throughout these series have been fascinating, so it will be interesting to see where Filoni takes him in this series.

Additionally, a still photo teasing Eman Esfandi as Ezra Bridger in season 2 of ‘Ashoka’ was released, and he looks just as good as the animated version (something that’s often rare in these live action adaptations). Filming began earlier this year with Filoni returning as show runner, having written all eight episodes scheduled to be released on Disney+.

‘The Boys’ and ‘Gen V’

The final season of Amazon’s hit superhero satire series was teased, including footage of Homelander standing in the White House addressing a group of people (“this will be a safer, god fearing nation”) and then a montage with your typical blood, guts, and violence from the show.

New cast member Jared Padalecki had his character revealed, reuniting him with former ‘Supernatural’ cast members Jenson Ackles (Soldier Boy) and Misha Collins.

Additionally, a full length trailer for the second season of ‘Gen V’ was released (partially revealing that The Deep will be featured in this season). The main cast was in attendance, and the new season is scheduled to be released in mid-September on Prime Video.

It: Welcome to Derry’

The second trailer of the long awaited HBO series revealed some new material that will be seen in the series, including things like a peek at Bill Skarsgaard returning as Pennywise, the period piece costumes, and what to expect overall. The show (adapted from Stephen King’s famous novel) will serve as a prequel to the films ‘It’ (2017) and ‘It Chapter Two’, with director Andy Muschietti returning to develop and produce the project.

‘It: Welcome to Derry’ will be released in October 2025 and has nine episodes.

‘The Long Walk’

2025 will be ushering in yet another Stephen King adaption, ‘The Long Walk’, based on his 1979 book of the same name (written under his pseudonym Richard Bachman). An extended trailer and the first twenty minutes of the film were shown at Comic-Con, with King himself introducing both.

Cooper Hoffman (‘Licorice Pizza’, ‘Saturday Night’) and David Jonsson (‘Alien: Romulus’) are playing the two main characters while Mark Hamill appears to be playing a villain (which he is frankly well suited for). It is set to be released by Lionsgate on September 12, 2025.

‘Rick and Morty’ Spin-Off

President Curtis from the long running Adult Swim series will be receiving his own show (named after himself), with Keith David returning to voice the President. Dan Harmon and James Siciliano co-created ‘President Curtis’ and will serve as executive producers on the series. This will mark the third spin off of the show of the comedy series following the anime and ‘The Vindicators’.

‘Peacemaker Season 2’

James Gunn was joined on stage at Comic-Con by the cast of the popular DC series (including John Cena in costume as the titular character) to discuss what to expect in season 2 and beyond. Gunn announced that the new season will be set one month after the events that took place in ‘Superman’, and Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion) and Hawkgirl (Isabella Merced) will appear in the first episode.

Some pictures of parallel dimension Peacemaker have been revealed, so it will be interesting to see where Gunn takes the character, especially considering that the show was created before he took over DC studios. The opening credits sequence, that includes all of the characters dancing, will be even bigger than last season with different music, as well.

‘Coyote vs. Acme’

After Warner Bros. shelved the project for tax purposes, there was no telling whether ‘Coyote vs. Acme’ would see the light of day (even on a random streaming service). Luckily, a small indie distributor (Ketchup Entertainment) saved the day and the film, giving it a theatrical release scheduled for August of next year.

At Comic-Con, there were some silly antics involving the cast and crew, bringing out a lawyer from the fictional Acme company who was trying to stop the release of footage since it was “anti-Acme”. This footage included still photos from the film such as John Cena choking out Tweety Bird, Will Forte setting things on fire in a court room, and Wile E. Coyote causing a car accident. This will be a must watch (in theaters) when it comes out, not only because of the crew going through hell and back to get this out into the world, but because there is a great chance of it being quite good.

An excerpt from the love letter: The Hollywood Insider’s CEO/editor-in-chief Pritan Ambroase affirms, We have the space and time for all your stories, no matter who/what/where you are. Media/Cinema/TV have a responsibility to better the world and The Hollywood Insider will continue to do so. Talent, diversity and authenticity matter in Cinema/TV, media and storytelling. In fact, I reckon that we should announce “talent-diversity-authenticity-storytelling-Cinema-Oscars-Academy-Awards” as synonyms of each other. We show respect to talent and stories regardless of their skin color, race, gender, sexuality, religion, nationality, etc., thus allowing authenticity into this system just by something as simple as accepting and showing respect to the human species’ factual diversity. We become greater just by respecting and appreciating talent in all its shapes, sizes, and forms. Award winners, which includes nominees, must be chosen on the greatness of their talent ALONE.

I am sure I am speaking for a multitude of Cinema lovers all over the world when I speak of the following sentiments that this medium of art has blessed me with. Cinema taught me about our world, at times in English and at times through the beautiful one-inch bar of subtitles. I learned from the stories in the global movies that we are all alike across all borders. Remember that one of the best symbols of many great civilizations and their prosperity has been the art they have left behind. This art can be in the form of paintings, sculptures, architecture, writings, inventions, etc. For our modern society, Cinema happens to be one of them. Cinema is more than just a form of entertainment, it is an integral part of society. I love the world uniting, be it for Cinema, TV, media, art, fashion, sport, etc. Please keep this going full speed.”
