A24‘s prison theater drama Sing Sing, starring Colman Domingo, is set to begin streaming exclusively on Max on March 21. The film will debut on HBO linear on March 22 at 8:00 p.m. ET.
Directed by Greg Kwedar, Sing Sing follows Divine G (Domingo), who while imprisoned at Sing Sing for a crime he didn’t commit, finds purpose by acting in a theatre group alongside other incarcerated men, including a wary newcomer (Clarence Maclin).
The film is inspired by the real-life Rehabilitation Through the Arts program at New York’s Sing Sing Correctional Facility. A notable aspect of the production was the casting of real-life formerly incarcerated individuals, many of whom were alumni of the RTA program. Bringing Domingo his second Oscar nomination for Best Actor, the film was released last July after premiering in the Special Presentations program of the 2023 Toronto Film Festival. It’s scored three Oscar noms this season in total, with the others coming in the categories of Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Song.
Domingo’s other co-stars include Sean San José, and Paul Raci, among others. Kwedar penned the script with regular collaborator Clint Bentley, with the pair producing alongside Monique Walton. Exec producers included Teddy Schwarzman, Michael Heimler, Colman Domingo, Raúl Domingo, Larry Kalas, Larry Kelly, Nancy Schafer, Maclin, and John ‘Divine G’ Whitfield.
Max is set to bring Waitress: The Musical to streaming tomorrow and recently set A24’s acclaimed horror film Heretic to make its streaming debut on March 7.
