Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has acquired all international rights excluding Canada, China, Japan and Russia. A24 retains domestic.
Plot details are being kept under wraps on the project, which we first told you about last year.
Pic is produced by Talk To Me duo Samantha Jennings and Kristina Ceyton from Causeway Films, whose credits also include The Babadook and The Nightingale. Salmira Productions and South Australian Film Corporation co-financed. It wrapped shoot last summer in Australia.
Sony Pictures’ Joe Matukewicz, President, Worldwide Acquisitions and his team Virginia Longmuir, EVP, Business Affairs, and Elan Kovo, VP Business Development brought the package to the studio and made the deal.
Australian filmmaking brothers Danny and Michael Philippou burst onto the scene with Talk to Me, which played in the Midnight Selections at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. The film went on to gross almost $50M domestic and $92M worldwide off a $4.5M budget, marking A24’s biggest domestic horror release to date. A sequel is currently in development with the studio.
In that movie, a group of young friends discover how to conjure spirits using an embalmed hand and they become hooked on the new thrill until one of them goes too far and unleashes terrifying supernatural forces. From the makeup of the cast, Bring Her Back will seemingly also have a kids/youth angle.
